Day 4 of Walking the Walk III

Day 4, March 16, 2010

Completed 18 Miles

We started the day at 5:30 a.m. and we quickly deemed it “D Day” due to us tackling the hill of Natchitoches. I believe that Day 4 determines our destiny and even though our bodies are aching, we are yet encouraged.

We reached our starting point at 8:30 a.m. and prepared for the journey by doing our morning ritual of stretching’s. We attempted to not focus much on the hills but in the back of our minds, we saw “The Hills” and we simply chuckled.  The first four miles went well and we were met with various waves and horns blowing.

We began to prepare for our break and Pastor William Roberson stopped by and shook our hands. We returned the love and fellowship that he showed as well as discuss that Pastor Everett and Lake Bethlehem Baptist Church would be participating in Revival this week at his church.

We set out on climbing the steep hills of Natchitoches around 10:42 a.m. and let me say this, “It was a long and rugged road!” We knew we need some kind of assistance, so we pulled out our reinforcements, IPODS!

Kirksey played his favorite rapper Tupac and I needed the mother of Gospel Music, Shirley Caesar to get me thru this journey and wouldn’t you know it: We finished the second leg half way up the hill. We came to rest in the driveway of a dear man simply named, Mr. Chambers and he was excited to see us. He stated that he had just finished reading of the walk and wanted to shake our hands and we were happy to oblige.

After fellowshipping with Mr. Chambers, we felt the need to press on and we didn’t do much talking as we continued listening to our IPod’s. I must testify and say, “The Climb got harder and harder however, the victory is ours, Saith the Lord.”  As we prepped to break for lunch, a truckload of gentleman stopped and exclaimed, “Are you guy’s celebrities, because we read about some guys walking for a cause and you guys favor them?”

We promptly shook their hands and thanked them for acknowledging us and I quickly responded, “No sir, we are not celebs, however we are walking for a cause we believe in.”  For the first time since walking, we took a real lunch break and we loved it. We met two young ladies, Hanna and Kirby, at Papa’s restaurant and they both were interested in Autism and fighting for it as well. They are both studying at Northwestern University and they served us a great lunch and before you knew it, we were back to walking.

Once back on the road, we knew we had 6 more miles left for us, so we put our IPod’s back in place and knocked out the last two legs. We were both grateful for safe passage and we were excited to realize that we completed 18 miles and ended the day in Natchez, which is located just below Natchitoches, Louisiana.

God is with us and we are grateful!

Day 3 of walking the Walk III

Day 3:

Once again, we are thankful for life and all of God’s blessings. Because we were further out, we had to get our day started earlier around 6:30 a.m. For now, we are meeting at LSU and transferring to one vehicle to complete our journey from the previous day.

After partaking in a healthy breakfast of high energy breakfast bars and our stretching routine, we began our trek at 8:20 a.m.

Our daily goal is to walk 3 miles and take a five minute break. However, we altered our plan today and decided to walk 4 miles and take a 10 min break instead. The logic to this decision is simple: Our legs are fresher in the morning and we are able to endure extra miles and it worked out great.

We also walked through Red River Parish today and eventually entered into Natchitoches Parish. Our day consisted of tons of waving and as usual it was eventful. We were also greeted by a great supporter in the form of Police Juror, John Moore, of Red River Parish. He was so gracious to us by welcoming us to the area.

God is so good, he knows when to send encouragement and I want to thank all of you that are praying for us. We feel your prayers!

We finished the day at 16 miles. God is good!!!!

Day 2 of Walking the Walk III

Day 2 March 14
18 Miles Today!!!

The day started off at 7: 00 a.m. with prayer courtesy of Bishop Larry Brandon via his radio show. We had the awesome opportunity to converse about the walk and the goals we hope to reach.

We were somewhat off kilter due to the Daylight Savings time change but we rebounded and pressed our way. After rendezvousing, we switched vehicles and headed towards our destination. Our stopping point was 16 miles on yesterday and we both were so grateful for God’s travel grace.

We began with various stretching techniques due to the soreness of our muscles. Eventually, we started our daily trek around 8:35 a.m. and left Caddo Parish and entered Red River Parish at 9:25 a.m. The air was a tad bit chilly but always engaged in our vision, we completed our first leg (3 Miles) around 8:40 a.m. and took it easy as well.

We actually started near a church, New Bethel Baptist Church, which reminded me that it was my Pastor, Dennis R. Everett's Anniversary, being grateful for a great man of God; I said a special prayer for him and his family. I received an email from Mr. Paul Pratt of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, where the Anointed One, Dr. Harry Blake is Pastor. It was the Sunday school lesson of the morning and it stated:

"You Have an Inheritance" And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.
Romans 8:17 (NLT)

The daily traffic was light with the exceptions of a mybrid of Huge Dump Trucks. (Sidebar: If you are interested in investing in one, let me know and we can get the ball rolling. Please note there is a lot of monies to be made in this endeavor)

Now, where was I??? Oh yes, The Walk!!!!!

The walking was slightly rough today once again, simply due to our bodies adjusting to the intense strain. We will most assuredly be experiencing these symptoms for at least two or three more days and new difficulties and challenges will arise but I’m certain that thru prayers and fierce determination, we will succeed.

We ended this blessed day at Willow Grove Baptist Church and we can proudly state, “We started and ended the day with the Lord.”

Finished the Day with 18 miles complete at 3:34 p.m. with a total of 34 miles completed!

Day One of Walking the Walk with Rep. Patrick Williams

Today is the Day that the lord has made and what a Beautiful day it is. The 3rd Annual "Walking the Walk" for Childhood Obesity and Autism was launched. I have to thank our Major Sponsor, Mr. Jim Elrod and the Willis Knighton System. Other sponsors include The Louisiana Casino Assoc., Louisiana Oil and Gas Association, Schumpert Medical and the YMCA.

We had a great turnout of supporters and media coverage. Bishop Larry Brandon of Praise Temple Full Gospel Baptist Cathedral offered the most heartfelt prayer that I am certain will last throughout the duration of the walk. The Bible asks, Is there a cause?  Yes, there is a cause.

The 226 miles symbolizes the hard work that is ahead of us. We are excited and I must tell you, with the adrenalin flowing, the boisterous crowd began the walk down the long sidewalk of the LSU campus adorned with a double row of beautiful trees. Various supporters began reminiscing on last year’s walk and excitement began to fill the air.  Once we reached LA 1, the many would begin to become the faithful few. Excitement continued while the media filmed and photographers snapped photos simultaneously. The few laughed and talked about how far they would go and the price there bodies would pay afterwards. Floyd Kirksey and I listened and began to joke as well, each of us knowing that soon, it would only be only two of us “Walking the Walk.”

As we continued our trek, we found ourselves seven miles down Highway 1. We were now down to our last supporters standing, Mrs. Ruthy Chapman, Tabitha’s sons’ teacher and my spirited sister, Tammy Stinson. Floyd Kirksey and I continue and pressed our way. We were both encouraged to know that people are already aware of our walk. We were moved to be received with various waves as well as horns blowing. As we continued our journey, we were approached by Mr. Ron Miles, an employee of Wells Office Supply. He stated that he was proud of what we are doing and his company would be making a donation toward the cause.

I am proud to say, the day ended with us completing 16 miles!
